The last weekend in August saw the Cardiff Celts come down West for a training weekend. They based themselves in Whitland and stayed in a local campsite. By all accounts their basketball was good in training, but their tent pitching skills require a lot more practise!
They arrived on the Saturday and after a mornings training they hosted a junior training session, which went extremely well and the youngsters who turned up thoroughly enjoyed themselves and learnt a lot from Chris Horrocks and the team.
On Saturday evening the senior team had an informal scrimmage with the Celts. This wasn't particularly well supported but was enjoyed by those who attended.
Sunday evening saw the whole road show move up to Trinity College Carmarthen where the West Wales Tropics played the Celts. The venue was fantastic, the support better than expected and extremely enthusiastic and the game great fun. The Celts are basically a semi pro outfit and one of the best teams in the UK, the Tropics are a newly formed team and the final score was 82 - 43 to the Celts. The Tropics performed very well at a level way above any competition they'll encounter in the season.
Every one of the Celts starting 5 were Welsh senior Internationals, including the current Welsh Captain, Mike Gregory, the leading scorer in the recent Euro competition, Tony Berry, ex-professional players Matt Daw and Chris Horrocks (also the coach).
The question on everyones mind after the game was can we use Trinity College for all senior games? Hopefully this can be arranged, but we'll let you know more in the future.
Thanks to the Celts for coming down for the weekend and helping us improve the image of basketball in the region. |
